[ESTRADES, Godefroi, comte d']. Zeedige beproeving van de voogestelde karakters, van den raad-pensionaris Johan de Wit. The Hague: Pieter van Os, 1757.

Contemporary Dutch red morocco, sides ornately gilt, a wide border of trees and lattice tools enclosing an oval frame composed of drawer handles, fleurons and other small tools, at centre the arms of the Stadholder, William V (1748-1806), spine gilt à la grotesque, pastepaper endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: William V of Orange (binding).
At the death of William II of Orange in 1650, the office of Stadholder was abolished and the administration of Holland was placed in the hands of John de Witt, grand pensionary (Raad-Pensionaris), who held undisputed authority for two decades, and who concluded a treaty with Cromwell excluding the prince of Orange from the position of Stadholder forever. The office was revived after his death, however, and declared hereditary to the house of Orange. The ownership by William V of Orange of this history of John de Witt therefore has particular relevance. A FINELY BOUND COPY of a work concerning an interesting episode in Dutch history.
