4° (195 x 145mm). Collation: A4; A4; B2; [C]-[Z]4; [AA]-[LL]4; [MM]1. 143 (of 144) leaves. Title printed in gothic type in red and black, woodcut decoration. 266 (of 270) woodcut illustrations, 100 full-page and 166 full-page-width, by Jost Amman and others, woodcut printer's device on B2, repeated on [MM]1, tailpiece and initial. Extra-illustrated with 21 excised woodcut illustrations on 19 leaves mounted to size, and 4 excised woodcut illustrations mounted to size on 2 leaves. (Some light browning, dampstained.) Crushed brown morocco by Rivière & Son, sides panelled in blind in a retrospective style, spine in compartments, lettered in gilt in 2, the others decorated in blind, gilt edges (lower part slightly affected by damp, light cracking on joints, short split on upper joint).

RARE, FIRST GERMAN EDITION. Originally published by Feyerabend as Insignia sacrae caesareae majestatis... (Frankfurt: 1579), the German edition was published 'un mois après l'édition originale' (Graesse), and was followed by a second German edition in 1589. Few complete copies are known: Hollstein lists one copy of this edition, sold in 1914 ('missing 13 blocks'), and only one copy has sold at auction since 1975. The additional inserted illustrations include others by Amman, for example Illustrated Bartsch 20/2 4.156 (368), 4.159 (368) (both reproduced in the Kunstbüchlin), 7.8 (370).
