Chancery 4° (208 x 150mm). Collation: A-B6 C4 D-E6 F8 (A1r title, A1v table, A2r text, F7v colophon, F8 blank). 36 leaves. 42 lines. Type: 1:72G, 2:168G, 3:336G. 2- to 4-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, the first initial space with guide-letter. Bearer type evident on first and final leaves. (Small stains on four leaves.) Modern half red morocco, top edge gilt, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance: Thomas Clarkson Wilberton (title inscription dated London, 1873).
Although later criticised by Erasmus, Negro's tract on epistolography was one of the most popular manuals on the subject in the 15th century. He was tutor to the son of Duke Ercole I, Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, at Ferrara from 1494 to 1505. A large copy, retaining many deckle edges. H *11878; BSB N-199; Goff N-250.
