RHETORUM GRAECORUM ORATIONES, in Greek: Orationes Horum Rhetorum; Orationes Infrascriptorum Rhetorum; Isocrates Orationes, etc. Venice: Aldus Manutius and Andreas Asulanus, April 1513 - 7 May 1513.
3 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (299 x 198mm). Titles to each part in Greek and Latin, Latin addresses by Aldus to Francesco Faseolo in part I and to Giambattista Egnazio in part III, colophon and register in Latin at end of parts II, III(i) and III(ii). Aldine device on each title. 48 lines and headline, initial spaces with guide-letter. (Very occasional slight browning or spotting, quire ff extended at lower margins.) Early 19th-century English red straight-grained morocco tooled in blind with pointillé design at corners, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (scuffed at extremities, discreet repairs at spine, very lightly stained, vol. II with tear at head of spine). Provenance: British Museum Library (duplicate sale 1814, £6.16.6, to Payne and Foss); Charles P. Burney (purchased from Payne and Foss for £9.9, gave to); Charles John Blomfield (Bp. of London, on his death in 1857 his heirs returned the volume to); Charles P. Burney (note recording gift in August 1857 tipped into vol. I).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of the works of the Attic orators, with the exception of Demosthenes, who had already been published, and one of the most important publications of the Aldine Press. Without a leaf between 14 and 15, blank but for 2 lines in Greek and Latin advising the binder to cut it away, which is preserved in a few copies (cf.
