FERRERS, George (1500?-1579). Document signed, 1 April 1562, granting, in conjunction with Walter Birchmow, three half-acres of land adjoining Bass Lane in Caddington (Beds.) to Radulph Osmund of Markyate for the sum of 50 shillings, on vellum, approximately 167 x 335mm, seal tags, remnants of seal (light soiling, pin holes).
George Ferrers is best known for his important contributions to A Mirror for Magistrates (1555 and later, see lot 335), but also enjoyed a significant political career, being amongst other things the subject of a case which is quoted as a precedent for parliamentary privilege from arrest. He was Master of the King's Pastimes in the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. Ferrers acquired property in Bedfordshire through his purchase of the site and demesnes of the Benedictine priory of Markyate in 1547.
