8° (190 x 123mm). Black letter with headings in roman and italic. Title within typographical border, woodcut floral initials. (Severely dampstained, title and preliminaries with small repair at lower margin, first three quires wormed at upper margin, single worm hole running through title and first half of text, some corners soiled and creased, lower margin of endleaves soiled.) Early 20th-century red morocco, spine with raised bands directly lettered and dated in gilt (covers affected by damp). Provenance: early inscriptions on title; Bernard Quaritch (collation note on rear endpaper signed 'E.M.D.').
FIRST EDITION. Henry Peacham, curate of North Mimms, Hertfordshire, and later rector of the north mediety of the parish of Leverton, near Boston, Lincolnshire, was father of Henry Peacham the younger (1576?-1643?), author of The Compleat Gentleman (1622). His only other book was A sermon upon the three last verses of the first chapter of Job (1591). Although not arranged alphabetically, The Garden of Eloquence otherwise takes the form of a dictionary which names, explains and gives examples of each rhetorical device current in Elizabethan English. A second edition appeared in 1593. STC 19497.
