Bound for presentation in contemporary gilt-tooled black goatskin, sides with panel of a star in circle roll enclosing the arms of Lord Howard of Effingham, flower tool at corners, narrow gilt roll border, plain spine, comb-marbled endpapers (slightly bowed, inner hinges split). FIRST EDITION, a reissue with variant imprint. The identity of Settle's binder remains uncertain, although one theory is that he bound and tooled the books himself. If disappointed in his expectations of a reward, he is known to have changed the coat-of-arms for another one. Foxon S-246.
