FIRST EDITION of a novel written in 1846, based on Charlotte Brontë's experiences in Brussels. As her husband, A.B. Nicholls, explains in his note to the 'Preface', Brontë intended to publish The Professor, following the appearance of Shirley in 1849, but 'being dissuaded from her intention, the authoress made some use of her materials in a subsequent work--''Villette.'' [1853] As, however, these two stories are in most respects unlike, it has been represented to me that I ought not to withhold ''The Professor'' from the public. I have therefore consented to its publication' (volume I, p.viii). Parrish Victorian Lady Novelists p.96 (calling for 2pp. of advertisements for 'Mrs Gaskell's Memoirs of Currer Bell', 8pp. of advertisements for 'Uniform Edition of the Works of Currer Bell', and 16pp. catalogue of 'New and Standard Works [...] 1857'); Sadleir 347 (calling for 2pp. advertisements in volume I and 16pp. dated 1857 in volume II only); Wise Brontë 8.
