2° (332 x 224mm). Engraved additional title with portrait of the author by William Marshall, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. (Additional title torn with some loss and laid down, 2C5, 6Y6, 7C2, 7H2-6 and 7I1-5 with margins repaired, 3P6 torn and repaired, 4B1 with paperfault hole, 7I3 shaved with some loss to text, some leaves with upper margin shaved affecting headline, first and last few leaves somewhat spotted.) 20th-century calf, spines gilt. Provenance: Portico (?ownership stamps).
FIRST EDITION of this 'compilation from various botanical writings including the unpublished material left by de l'Obel at the time of his death. This had been purchased by Parkinson' (Henrey). However Parkinson attempts the description of nearly 4000 plants, 1000 more than Johnson's edition of Gerrard's Herbal published in 1630, and includes the names of 28 species not previously recorded in Britain.
