Lot Essay

After returning from Crete (see lot 114), Lear spent the winter of 1864-5 in Nice, exploring the coast as far east as Genoa in December. On 12 December he was at Oneglia (now part of Imperia). Diano Marino is 5 kilometres to the east with a valley running back north from the sea past Diano S. Pietro and Diano Castello; it is known for its olive groves and, today, as a seaside resort.
