Lot Essay

The sitter was the second son of Richard Wilbraham of Nantwich (1528-1612). A distinguished Elizabethan lawyer, he served as Solicitor General in Ireland. He was later King James I's Master of the Court of Requests and Surveyor of the Court of Wards and Liveries and was knighted on 20 May 1603. He purchased the Dorfold estate, near Nantwich, which on his death passed to his younger brother, Ralph, who built the present Dorfold Hall, in 1616.
