oval, 1 11/16 in. (42 mm.) high, gilt-metal brooch frame, the outer border formed as a serpent with rose-cut diamond eyes

Lot Essay

This is a typical work of Birch's American period. In 1794, Birch took his family to Philadelphia and introduced enamel painting in America. Other enamels of his American period are illlustrated in D. T. Johnson, American Portrait Miniatures in the Manney Collection, New York, 1990, colour pl. 9, and no. 13-17.
