A longtime "secret" to Zinfandel collectors, Sky Vineyards has been producing small quantities (now about 2,000 cases) of superb Zinfandel from its high-altitude site on Mt. Veeder for two decades. The wine is crushed in a 100-year old basket press directly into one-ton fermenters, hand-punched for 7-10 days, hand-bottled, and hand-labeled. (In fact, everything is done by hand at this winery, which operates without electricity, and added a telephone line only in 1988. A four wheel-drive vehicle is required to get to the site.) Owner and winemaker Lore Olds avoids high alcohol and prominent new oak, letting the fresh fruit express the brush and wild herbs of the chapparal surrounding his vineyard. He is also responsible for the label art, which changes each year. Only ten cases of magnums were produced in the 1995 vintage.
