Lot Essay

Although de Caullery is known to have produced a number of Italianate townscapes and Venetian views, he is thought never to have actually travelled to Italy, residing in Antwerp for his entire career. The carnival theme with a bullfight is treated by the artist in a View of the Piazza San Marco sold at Christie's, London, 30 November 1979, lot 77 (£20,000) and another picture at Sotheby's, London, 4 December 1997, lot 244 (£85,000). The occasions for which these bullfights were staged is unknown, although it is believed that they were to celebrate the arrival in the city of distinguished visitors.
