A terminus ante quem for the present picture can be established by the depiction of the Campanile on the far left of the composition, shown prior to the addition of the onion-shaped steeple in 1726-8. Professor Dario Succi dates this view to soon after the artist's arrival in Venice in 1717, a time when Richter's output was heavily influenced by his contemporary, Luca Carlevarijs. Two later views of San Giorgio by the artist are known, both showing the Campanile after its rebuilding (Stockholm, Nationalmuseum; the second, one of a pair, sold in these Rooms, 6 July 1990, lot 77 (£75,000)).
