Lot Essay

The Turkish Ambassador, Hagi Hussein Effendi, was in Naples from 30 August to 18 October 1741 and his portrait by Bonito, signed and dated 1741, is in the Prado, having been in Spain since 1746 (J. Urrea Fernandez, La Pintura Italiana del Siglo XVIII en España, s.l., 1977, p. 309, pl. XCV). The visit of the court provided exotic subjects ideally suited to the rich, light colours of Neapolitan eighteenth-century painting.
