Lot Essay

The serpentined and reeded frame relates to that of a 'cabriole' chair in Thomas Malton's, Complete Treatise on Perspective, London, 1775, (pl. XXXIII). A related armchair with cartouche back is illustrated in M. Harris, The English Chair, London, 1946, pl. LXX.
