Lot Essay
The arch-crested chairs have fretted sun-ray backs centred by inlaid medallions, while their hermed feet have reeds inset at the top of their flutes. The back-pattern, with different inlay, features on an armchair, with fluted seat-rail, illustrated in F. L. Hinckley, Hepplewhite, Sheraton and Regency Furniture, New York, 1987, p.64, fig. 92. The leg pattern, appears on a Hepplewhite style shield-back and medallion-inlaid chair formerly in the Fred Skull collection (P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol.I, p. 296, fig. 224).
