Lot Essay

The serpentined frame, with its scalloped and acanthus-wrapped scrolls and Venus-shell badge displayed in a ribbon-twined cartouche, relates to the French 'picturesque' style popularised by Matthias Lock's pattern book Six Tables, 1746.
