Lot Essay

Ex Murray Collection 1925.

The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm George Harp as a Private in the Royal Marines aboard the Northumberland for the action of 22.5.1812, one of just 63 recipients of this clasp recorded on the Admiralty roll.

For the destruction of the French Frigate Ariane and Andromaque and the Brig Mameluk, off the Isle de Groix, Lorient on 22.5.1812.
It is interesting to speculate whether Private Harp was still serving in the Northumberland at the time of Napoleon being removed to her at Torbay for transportation to St. Helena in June 1815.
