The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm Samuel Bater as a Private in the Royal Marines aboard the Eurotas for the action of 25.2.1814, one of just 32 recipients of this clasp recorded on the Admiralty roll.
'A gallantly contested engagement was that between the Eurotas, 38, Captain Phillimore, and the French 40-gun Frigate Clorinde, though unfortunately the crew of the former were robbed of the fruits of their exertions by the arrival of the Druid, 36, to which ship Clorinde surrendered, just as the Eurotas, having rigged three jury-masts, was approaching the French Frigate to renew the action. The loss on board the British ship, which, as we have denoted, was totally dismasted, was three Midshipmen and 18 men killed, and the Captain, two Officers, and 36 wounded, out of a complement of 329 hands. The Clorinde, which commenced the action with 344 men, had 30 killed and 40 wounded' (Great Battles of the British Navy, by Lieutenant C.R. Low, R.N., refers).
