The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm James James as an Able Seaman aboard the Hebrus for the action against the Etoile on 27.3.1814, one of just 40 recipients of this clasp recorded on the Admiralty roll. One man, however, with the same names, was entitled to a single 'Syria' clasp.
'Two months later both these Frigates were captured, the Sultane by the Hannibal, 74, and the Etoile, after a protracted action of three hours' duration [off the Island of Alderney], by the 38-gun Frigate Hebrus, Captain Palmer, during which she lost her mizzenmast, and 40 men killed and 73 wounded, out of a complement of 325 men. Of the gallant crew of the Hebrus numbering 284 men and boys, one Midshipman and 12 men were killed, and 25 wounded. Both Prizes were added to the Navy' (Great Battles of the British Navy, by Lieutenant C.R. Low, R.N., refers).
