Lot Essay

The published Naval General Service Medal rolls and the Admiralty roll confirm Hugh Shellshear as an Able Seaman aboard the Phaeton for the 'Glorious First of June' and the action of 17.6.1795, and as a Gunner aboard the Scipion for the Java operations of September 1811. The '23rd June 1795' clasp was obviously issued in error in place of the '17 June 1795' clasp.
