Major-General Edmund Wintle was born in Jessore, India in 1800 and was appointed an Ensign in the 21st Bengal Infantry in 1819. Gaining steady advancement over the next two decades, he served as a Major Commanding, 71st Bengal Native Infantry in Brigadier Wheeler's Force in the Punjab operations of 1848-49 and was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in the 8th Native Infantry in July 1852. Wintle was eventually placed on the Retired List with the honorary rank of Major-General in 1861.
