Lieutenant Sydney Archibald Roberts entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in early 1862, was advanced to Midshipman in January 1867 and served off Abyssinia in H.M.S. Argus. Advanced to Sub-Lieutenant in July 1868, and to Lieutenant in September 1872, he retired in February of the following year.
