Lot Essay

Private William Wakeham was born near Arundel, Sussex and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in February 1841, aged 18 years. Verified as having served at Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann with the 1st Battalion, he was discharged in February 1862, his other overseas postings having taken him to the Ionian Islands for over one year and to the Cape of Good Hope for another five. He was also the recipient of a L.S. and G.C. Medal.
