Pay Master Sergeant Robert Ballard was born in Lambeth and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at Westminster in December 1854, aged 18 years. Discharged with a 'Very Good' character assessment in December 1875, but not having seen any active service, he had latterly been employed on the Staff of the North Gloucester Militia.
