Sergeant William Dawson was born in Lambeth and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at Westminster in November 1843, aged 21 years. In addition to his verified services at the Battle of the Alma and in the operations before Sebastopol, he served for over seven years in North America and over five years in Malta. Dawson, who was advanced to Sergeant in November 1860, was discharged with an 'Exemplary' character assessment in May 1865.
