Lot Essay

Private Henry C. Rumble was born in Colchester and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in September 1852, aged 21 years. Posted to the Crimea, where he is verified as being present at Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann, he was advanced to Corporal in March 1855 and to Sergeant in October of the same year. Alas, Rumble lost his Stripes for a conviction of drunkeness in the trenches before Sebastopol shortly afterwards and was discharged in September 1856.
