Lot Essay

Captain James Albert Turner was born in Stepney, London in May 1892 and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in September 1914. Arriving in France in March 1915 as a newly promoted Corporal, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, with whom he was wounded on 9.5.1915 by a gunshot to his backside. Returning home for treatment, Turner was posted back to the Western Front as a Sergeant in the 16th Battalion, prior to once more returning home in March 1917 to attend an Officers Training Course. Commissioned into the 5th Battalion in September 1917, of which he became Adjutant, he finished the War back in France. Released in February 1919, Turner was permitted to retain the rank of Captain (London Gazette 29.11.1921 refers).
