Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Henry Richards was born at Stoke Dameral, Devonshire and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1880. After seeing active service in Egypt in 1882 and against the Sultan of Witu in 1893, he was discharged in 1905 at his own request.
