Lot Essay

Bieneck, loc. cit., considers the prime version to be that in the North Carolina Museum of Art. She lists a variant in the collection of the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace, Perthshire, as well as numerous copies of varying degrees of quality. Although she lists the present work as a copy, traces of pentiments would suggest that it was a product of the artist's studio.
