Saint Andrew led to Martyrdom

For the attribution compare with a group of works named after an, as of yet, unidentified artist responsible for the Supper at Emmaus at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Pau (F. Bologna, catalogue of the exhibition, Battistello Caracciolo e il primo naturalismo a Napoli, Castel Sant' Elmo, Naples, 9 Nov. 1991-19 Jan. 1992, p. 268, no. 2.13, illustrated and fig. 24). Ferdinando Bologna has linked a number of other paintings with the Pau picture: those include, a Saint condemned to Martyrdom in a private collection, Naples (op. cit., p. 268, no. 2.14, colour pl. 16), An Astronomer, at the Musée Girodet, Montargis (ibid., p. 269, no. 2.15, illustrated) and Christ among the Doctors, in a private collection, Naples (ibid., p. 31, fig. 25).

The similarity in handling is striking, notably the detailed attention to the folds of skin, emphasised by sharp facial features, combined with a strongly delineated Caravaggesque chiarascuro.
