The huge American demand for British sports cars brought sufficient orders to keep the production lines in business at Abingdon. The modern looking, streamlined MGA had been introduced in 1955 and was a complete sales success in the important North American market. Not suprisingly, many were actively campaigned in motor sport with the parent company, BMC, keen to support the official works entries. Privateers also enjoyed their MGA racing as the cars aquitted themselves well against the Healey Sprites, Sunbeams and Midgets which were also popular with club racers.

This race prepared example spent all of its known history between 1959 and 1989 based in the Detroit area, having been first raced by Donald Watson on July 4th 1959 at the Harewood Ontario Race Track in Canada. The roadster was primarily raced at SCCA sanctioned club events at tracks such as Road America, Mid Ohio and Waterford Hills. Mr.Watson remembers the car fondly, proudly declaring that we won a lot more races than we lost with that car. He sold the car to a Mr. R. Nixon, again from Detroit, who registered it with the Detroit Region of the SCCA in the late 1960's, receiving log book number 10/195. He also campaigned the car successfully, placing second in the SCCA Central Division Points Championship. After a few more changes of ownership in the Eighties, the car passed to David Dahlin in 1989 and was restored to its present show winning condition. It has its original Huffaker prepared MGB engine with high compression head that was fitted in 1962 to SCCA Class F specification and coupled to a four speed close ratio gearbox. The car also has all of the current vintage race modifications for safety including fuel cell, shoulder harness and fire system. The removeable roll bar is in fact the original 1959 item. The MGA was both raced and shown at the International Challenge Vintage event at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin in July last year and it won its class at the Concours. Thanks to the superb photography of Al Bixer, period photographs of the car racing have survived and these are included in the sale, together with copies of the early race results.

Ready to race, the MGA would be ideal for campaigning at club events throughout the country for relatively modest outlay.
