The 1930 Lincoln represents the last year of production of the Model L, the car that established Lincoln in the highest echelon of American luxury automobiles. Originally designed by Henry Leland, one of the great geniuses of the automobile industry, and introduced in 1920, the Model L was steadily refined through the decade of the Twenties, but never materially changed in chassis or drivetrain. Even when the Lincoln Motor Company was taken over by Ford, the quality standards established by Leland were faithfully adhered to. However, Edsel Ford became responsible for coachwork and design of Lincoln cars, and by the end of the Twenties he had wrought a vast improvement in Lincoln aesthetics compared to the conservative designs first offered by Leland. Reflecting the boom years of the late Twenties and the growth of interest in custom bodied luxury automobiles, Lincoln for 1930 catalogued bodies from no less than seven coachbuilders in addition to the factory built body types. These sources produced a combined total of 37 models!
This 1930 Lincoln is recorded as first being delivered to the Court Motor Company of Long Beach. We understand that Mr. Browning purchased the car from Mr. Jack Hilton in 1977. The Judkins Berline on offer represents a most unique survivor from the glorious coachbuilt era of motoring splendor. Although considered a limousine, Judkins used a looser roof line and a more tightly proportioned body to achieve a more intimate interior feel than that of a conventional limousine. New for the 1930 Berlines was a rakishly slanted windshield and a sun visor greatly reduced in size, features that were foretelling of the styling trends of the early Thirties.
This Lincoln seems to have been used and enjoyed, but it is still a well maintained slightly older restoration. The engine bay and motor are extremely clean and look very correct. The rear compartment is replete with all of the amenities expected of a limousine including speakerphone, vanity mirrors and flower vases. The division glass is designed to disappear with little trace when lowered so that the car could be owner driven when the mood struck. The driver's compartment appears to have the correct instrumentation including a Seth Thomas electric clock. Additional highlights include dual Trilin rear lights, dual sidemount spares with covers and mirrors, chrome valve stems, a single Pilot Ray driving lamp, dual Depress Beam headlamps and most impressively an original Judkins trunk. This automobile is a splendid example of the finest in coachbuilt luxury from the Roaring Twenties and highly desirable in its very complete and correct state.
