Isaac Dawson of Ashby-de-la-Zouche, son of John Dawson, was born in Ashby in 1694. A lawyer by profession he was stopped and bound by three highwaymen on a journey to York. He later caught and arrested them and received the £40 reward after their subsequent execution. Unable to enjoy the money obtained through the death of others he founded the Blue-Coat Charity, a public school, and paid for the preaching of an annual sermon, commemorative of his deliverance from death.
