Lot Essay

This boldly figured walnut chest-of-drawers is extremely unusual for two specific reasons; firstly, the distinctive serpentine apron is extremely advanced, pre-empting what is normally considered to be a feature of George III furniture of circa 1780 such as A. Hepplewhite illustrated in his The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1st Edition, 1788, pl. 32. While the feather-banded brushing-slide is a very rare and sophisticated detail.
