Lot Essay

This unusual bachelor's chest is very close in design to one sold by Mrs E.R. Stuart in these Rooms, 16 July, 1953, lot 52, 'A Queen Anne walnut bachelor's chest' (£252) which has a three drawer superstructure above a hinged top 'enclosing divisions for ink vases'. Although the propotions are extremely close, the figured-walnut front has seven drawers below the hinged top, rather than the seventeen seen here.
