Decorated en grisaille with various scenes, the cover inscribed 'Vue de la Place de Spa & La Fontaine du Pouhon', the interior fitted with four further smaller boxes, each further decorated and inscribed 'Tonnelet, La Watroz, La Sauveniere & Le Geronstere', respectively

Lot Essay

The japanning industry in Spa began in the 17th century and flourished throughout the 18th century. Its souvenir wares ranging from snuff boxes to wardrobes, proving highly popular with the fashionable visitors who flocked from throughout Europe to take the waters and frequent its gaming rooms.
