This painted screen, shows the innovative Etruscan style with the use of neo-classical motives such as arabesques, medallions and vases, popularised by Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) in the late 1760s and 1770s. Pillement is notable for his decorations of singeries and chinoiseries, such as those commissioned by the King of Poland for Warsaw Castle. In 1767 he discovered a new method of painting with fast colours on silk. In the same year, many of his designs, popular with textile designers, were published in London in an influential series of engravings: One Hundred and Thirty Figures and Ornaments and Some Flowers in the Chinese Style.
