A mid-Victorian oak breakfront wardrobe
The moulded rectangular cavetto cornice above a plain frieze and above a central arched mirrored door flanked by two conforming panelled doors each with a Gothic arch to the upper edge, the spandrels filled with flowers and foliage, the central door enclosing three slides and four cedar-lined long drawers, the left side enclosing a metal bar, the right side enclosing two metal hooks, on a plinth base with bracket feet, lacking one slide to the central compartment, the lock stamped 'Saml Hall Birmingham'

Lot Essay

The mirror-centred wardrobe with its foliated spandrels and Gothic-cusped arches is likely to have been acquired for Adare Manor, Ireland by Edward Richard Windham (d. 1871), 3rd Earl of Dunraven and Countess Augusta in the 1850s, when they were employing the architect P. C. Hardwick to complete the work begun by A.W.N. Pugin (d. 1852). See lot 53.
