Lot Essay

Designed in the Louis XVI 'Roman' fashion celebrating Virtue's Triumph, this beribboned medallion frame of Roman acanthus is guarded by Jove's Eagle and festooned with an abundance of fruit and flowers. A portrait of Sir L. Jenkins executed in Nijmegen in the late 1670s by Herbert Tuer (Tuard) is accompanied by a related frame, that is likewise richly carved with open fretwork (Pieter J. J. van Thiel et al., Framing in the Golden Age, Amsterdam, 1995, no. 84).
