Lot Essay

The present lot was painted as a memorial to the heroes of the Greek War of Independance, which was at a decisive phase in 1829, the year of the Battle of Navarino. Decombe, who was a pupil of Berjon, was a textile designer. He had exhibited a picture of a comparable subject 'Guirlande de fleurs enlaçent une urne placée sur une tombe' at the Paris salon of 1824.
