Gibbs formed one of the most distinguished of libraries of the 19th century. To quote the foreword of the Sotheby's sale catalogue of 'The Famous Library of Lord Aldenham' 1937', 'the library follows the literature of the 18th and 19th centuries which had not yet begun to appeal... is rich in illuminated manuscripts, chosen among many schools and periods principally for their beauty and artistic interest'. It also included early English bibles and liturgies - his collection of the latter was 'one of the very finest existing in private hands'. The books were kept chiefly in London and St Dunstans, in the Regent's Park, the Decimus Burton villa which he had bought from Lord Hertford's executors in 1856 and also at Aldenham and Clifton Hampden. Several of these catalogues are extensivley annotated in Lord Aldenham's hand and also in that of an amanuensis.
