London: W.Strahan and T.Cadell, 1773. 3 volumes. 4°, 10¾ x 8½in. (27.5 x 21.4cm.). 51 engraved plates, charts and maps only (of 52), (41 folding). (Lacking plate between pp.280 and 281 of vol.II, without final blank 3G2 in vol.II, occasional light browning or spotting, two plates in vol.II detached, one map in vol.I and one plate in vol.III shaved into image area.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked, scuffed).

FIRST EDITION, early issue. The earliest issue contains neither the chart of the Straits of Magellan (present in this copy), nor the directions for placing the cuts and charts.
The work is primarily prized for the description, in vols.II and III, of Cook's first voyage.
