Lot Essay

Nicholls was a contemporary of Thomas and William Daniell, and like them he travelled around India after arriving in Calcutta. In 1799 he became draftsman in the Office of the Surveyor-General and in 1802 surveyed Orissa, south of Bengal. He returned to England in 1815.
