A pair of Pintail Ducks
with inscription and date 'J.962.Pintail Duck shot 9 Nov: 81. just after migrating to India after breeding./This is a femail Pintail that for some reason could not migrate with the/rest at the usual season April and remained through the hot season and rains till/I shot it on 24 Augt. The speculum on wing was exactly as above represented./J.962. Pintail Duck (female). Wazirgunge. 24 augt 81.!' (lower centre)

The catalogue entry should read, Sir Henry Leland Harrison was elected as a member of the Board of Revenue in 1890 and not 1990.

Lot Essay

The inscription on the present watercolour and that on lot 337a is by Sir Henry Leland Harrison (1837-1892). Harrison went out to Bengal in 1860 for a career in the Indian civil service. He rose to be the Commissioner of Police and the chairman of the Corporation of Calcutta between 1881-1890. Elected as a member of the Board of Revenue in 1990, he died of cholera two years later.
