Each scrolled arched crestrail centered by a rocaille above an inswept square back and flaring seat with scrolled seatrail centered by an asymmetrical rocaille, flanked by downswept armrest with scrolled handrests on inverted cabriole supports, on cabriole legs each headed by a volute, each with the original padded back and seat upholstered à chassis with wool needlepoint, one chair with a bird and flowering branch to each, the other with a landscape to each (2)

Lot Essay

This model of armchair with its undulating square back and serpentine seat rail is typical of Genoese production. A related chair (one of a pair) is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and is illustrated in L. Canonero, Barocchetto Genovese, Milan, 1962, Tav. XIV.
