Lot Essay

In the Netherlands the collecting of Dutch colonial furniture did not gain popularity until the end of the 19th Century. One of the first collectors was Mrs. Gybland Oosterhoff-Neys who together with her husband put together one of the largest collections of this kind of furniture. From 1887 untill 1890 she compiled her collection in Indonesia where she encountered a fresh market. Until then virtually nobody took serious intrest in the ebony furniture of the late 17th and early 18th Centuries. An advantage from a collectors point of view as many pieces were literally untouched.

A comparable bench is in the collection of the Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and illustrated in D.C. Mees, Kunstnijverheid en Tegels 1600-1800, Rotterdam 1997.
