A Dutch burr-walnut longcase clock
The movement by Willem van Dadelbeek (1707-?), Utrecht, circa 1735
The rectangular canted case, on ebonised bun feet, the panelled trunk door with a glazed lenticle with gilt-metal mount, the hood with turned columns, sound frets to the frieze, sides and caddy-top, the concave moulded caddy-top with figural finials, the brass chapter ring with Roman and Arabic chapters, later pierced black painted steel hands, the matted and engraved centre with brass seconds ring and date aperture and surmounted by a pierced engraved panel inscribed W van Dadelbeek/Utrecht, surmounted by a rolling moonphase and inscribed S and N to one side, the five pillar movement with anchor escapement and strike on two bells, restorations, the caddy-top probably associated

Lot Essay

Willem van Dadelbeek (1707-?) was born in Utrecht in 1707. He was brought up in an orphanage. In september 1733 he married Dorothea Elisabeth Jongbloed in Wijk bij Duurstede, Holland. On the 19th of april 1737 he bought a house in the Schoutensteeg in Utrecht, and in 1747 he is still recorded as living and working at that adress.
